Scrabble Bonus Words — December 2017

Slower month in December, fewer games, focusing on school, fours, fives, and Tier One bonuses. Still got to play some fun words, though. The following is my bonus word list for December 2017 from games I played on ISC.ro, against Quackle, and against the EA/Hasbro Scrabble app. Blanks are not recorded. A complete list of bonus words played can be found here.

Sevens (16): ANATTAS, AUDITEE, AVIDITY, BANDIER, BELIERS, BRASSIE, DIRECTS, EATERIE, GEFILTE, HOSTIES, INOSINE, LARNIER, ROWBOAT, SAINING, TENAILS, TIMIDER.

Eights (15): ARCHIVES, FORFENDS, GLITTERY, GLUTENIN, LARIATED, LIEGEMAN, OROGENIC, OVERWENT, ROTATIVE, RUINATED, TEAKWOOD, TENEBRAE, TRAINFUL, VAMOOSED, XERASIAS.

Nines (1): STRIDLING.

Thirty-two total bonuses, with four misses: FAUTEUIL, OUTVALUE, VERBOTEN, and OENOMETER. 88.9% success rate, which ends my 90% streak, although it was a short month. Two of my misses were 5v8’s with two U’s.  A complete list of missed bonuses can be found here. GLUTENIN was a nine-timer, and TEAKWOOD is one of my favorites only because I hope to make use of TEAKWOOD + N = TAEKWONDO someday. XERASIAS is my first eight beginning with X (since I started recording my bonuses).

ANATTAS, AUDITEE, and TRAINFUL join my list of repeated bonuses.
A complete list of repeated bonuses can be found here.

Favorite bonuses of 2017: CRUZIES, MOHELIM, NUDNIKS, OLICOOK, ROWBOAT, CURATRIX, DETRAQUE, EXORDIUM, FAIRYDOM, FLUIDITY, GLUTENIN, MARABOUT, MESODERM, PULVINAR, PUMPABLE+, QUADRATI+, SCARPAED, TEAKWOOD, TEGUEXIN, XERASIAS, CHOCOLATE, STRIDLING.

Scrabble Bonus Words — November 2017

November was one of my more active months, including a two-day tournament in Asheville, NC. Despite a rough second day I have many reasons to be happy with my play, including finishing day one in first place, a 2.5 bonus-per-game average with only four misses, and a 448 ppg average (to my opponents’ 417). I may still post a few of those games from Asheville. The following is my bonus word list for November 2017 from games I played in Asheville, on ISC.ro, against Quackle, and against the EA/Hasbro Scrabble app. Blanks are not recorded. A complete list of bonus words played can be found here. Tournament games are indicated in bold below.

Sevens (46): AENEOUS, AMPULES, ANAEMIA, ANEARED, ATEBRIN, ATONERS, ATTRAPS, AVIDINS, CRUZIES, DECORUM, DIASTEM, ENGRAFT, ENTRISM, ESPARTO, ESTRICH, IMMURED, INJURED, KARTING, LIBRATE, MARTENS, MORTARS, OLDENED, OLICOOK, OUTDOES, OVERSAD, PONCEAU, QUIETEN, RAMTILS, REFRESH, REINDEX, REPINED, RETRACK, ROBINIA, SAFROLE, SIGHTER, SMITTEN, SPELEAN, STRIPED, TANGOED, TELLIES, TOENAILS, TOLEDOS, TRIOSESUNSEATS, UPSTATE, VOIDEES.

Eights (47): AGITATOR, ANSWERED, APRICOTS, AVOIDANT, BARRINGS, BIENNIAL (2), DINGBATS, DRAFTIER, DRAGONET, DRAUGHTS, DUELISTS, EISWEINS, EMBRUTED, EPIGAMIC, ESTRAGON, FEMINISE, FILANDER, GENEROUS, GONADIAL, GREENISH, HOTLINER+, LANDINGS, LANTERNS, LASSOERS, OILERIES, OVERGOAD, OVERHANG, OVERNAME, PIVOTERS, POUTIEST, PREVALUE, PULVINAR, RATTLINE, REOILING, RESTROVE, SAVORIER, SCARPAED, SCROUGES, SERMONER, SMUSHING, TABLETED, TEGUEXIN, TOPLINER, VETTURAS, VOLATILE, WRETCHED.

Nines (2): BEGUILERS, PAPERIEST.

Ninety-five total bonuses played, including the word BIENNIAL twice. HOTLINER+ was my lone CSW15 addition played in November, though I’m very pleased to have finally played TEGUEXIN. In Asheville, ATTRAPS, CRUZIES, OLDENED, OLICOOK, FEMINISE, OVERNAME, and SCARPAED all earned ten bonus points upon challenge. GONADIAL was a 149-point nine-timer. DRAFTIER was worth 158, but it was against the Hasbro app.

The number of repeated bonuses has now become significant. AENEOUS, ANEARED, ATONERS, ENGRAFT, QUIETEN, SIGHTER, AGITATOR, BIENNIAL, EISWEINS, GREENISH and OILERIES all join the twice-played list while AVOIDANT joins the thrice-played list. I’ll probably need to find a new way to organize them on the page now that I’m beginning to play twice as many duplicates as usual. A complete list of repeated bonuses can be found here.

My November misses were HYSTERIA, BASANITE, ASPERATE, GLUCANS, TIGERISH, BLUNGERS, DARKNETS, and LITHARGE, which gives me my second highest percentage of bonuses found (92.2%) so far, and second consecutive month over 90%. The first four in that list were my Asheville misses (90% found in tournament). BASANITE and LITHARGE are the only Tier One misses of that group. I also attempted the phonies MOGGERS* and REFROST* in Asheville, only to have them challenged off (confused with MOGGIES and I have no idea). I’m hesitant to call ASPERATE a miss since I did find PAPERIEST but I haven’t fully analyzed yet how I wanted to play the board that game, but I’ll list it anyway. Even if I wouldn’t have played it, I should have seen it. A complete list of missed bonuses can be found here.

Scrabble Bonus Words — October 2017

Boring month but I’ve finally managed to find more than 90% of my bonus words. I’ve gone 54 for 57 in October, for a success rate of 94.7%. They’re all very standard, no holy grails, but I feel I can attribute my better performance to slowing down my play and reviewing the fours and fives so I miss fewer hooks. Next month I’m playing a tournament in Asheville NC, which will be my first since Lille, France. The following is my bonus word list for October 2017 from games I played in person, on ISC.ro, against Quackle, and against the EA/Hasbro Scrabble app. Blanks are not recorded. A complete list of bonus words played can be found here.

Sevens (28): AGISTER, ALUNITE, ANOETIC, ASSEVER, BEINKED, CURDLED, ELEGITS, ENCINAL, ENDITES, GRODIER, HABITUE, HASBIAN, IODISER, KNIFERS, LEVULIN, NEDDISH, ONSTAGE, PROPONE, QUIETEN, RABBONI, SERVERS, STANGED, TIDIEST, TITULED, TORMINA, WINESOP, WINTLES, ZLOTIES.

Eights (26): ATHERINE, ATTORNEY, CHEROOTS, COGENERS, DAUNTONS, DETRAQUE, DIRENESS, DISCOERS, EXPIRANT, FINNIEST, FLETTONS, LEVANTED, LOOTINGS, MESODERM, OUTEATEN, OVERRUNS, PALTERER, PREFILES, REALISES, ROYALISE, TENURIAL, TOGETHER, TRIBADES, UNREAVED, UNRIDDLE, ZORGITES.

None of my October bonuses were CSW15 additions. Six of them are bonuses I’ve played a second time since I started recording them: IODISER, ONSTAGE, STANGED, WINESOP, DAUNTONS, and OUTEATEN. I’m still surprised by how few of my bonuses are repeats after playing thousands of them, but it’s also fun to play many different ones. A complete list of repeated bonuses can be found here.

My three misses this month were BORONIA, INHESION, and GIRANDOLA, all of which I knew but had forgotten. A complete list of missed bonuses can be found here.

Scrabble Bonus Words — September 2017

My bonus percentage dropped this month, from 89.5% to 87%. Still chasing that elusive 90%, even though my word knowledge is increasing every day. This time I feel it was a lack of review issue (I’ve been focusing more on fives lately). The following is my bonus word list for September 2017 from games I played in person, on ISC.ro, and against Quackle. Blanks are not recorded. A complete list of bonus words played can be found here.

Sevens (41): AGENDUM, ANTLIAE, APTERAL, BAILORS, BONSELA, CESTOID, DESMOID, DISARMS, HAGRIDE, HITTERS, INQUERE, LAITIES, LEAGUES, MILORDS, MOHELIM, NUDNIKS, OUTGLOW, PANOCHE, PLENIST, RANGOLI, REBOANT, REFRAIN, REGLUED, RELENTS, ROOTAGE, SHEETER, SOLIDLY, SPLICER, STANGED, TABBIES, TALONED, TANNERS, TANNEST, TARTARS, TERTIAL, TINAMOU, TOISONS, TORPORS, TURGENT, VANNERS, WHINERS.

Eights (44): ACHENIAL, AUCTIONS, BARONESS, DENARIES, DOUBLING, DREADEST+, DROOLIER, FRUITING, INDENTER, INNATIVE, INTERRED, INTERWEB, JAUNTIES, LAURELED, MANSUETE, MONIKERS, MOTORING, NEREIDES, PERIAGUA, PIANETTE, PILLAGED, POWERING, PRIMAGES, PUMPABLE+, QUADRATI+, QUIESCES, REALISMS, REMAINED, RENOVATE, RETINULA, RORTIEST, SAXONITE, SERENITY, SERVANTS, SLITHERY, STEAMING, STROLLER, SULTANAS, SWATHIER, TANISTRY, TENDANCE, THEREOUT, TOUTIEST, TWEELING.

Nines (1): PRETENDER.

Three of these are recent CW15 additions: DREADEST+, PUMPABLE+, and QUADRATI+. The repeated words are becoming more frequent, with PANOCHE, REFRAIN, ROOTAGE, WHINERS, RORTIEST, and STROLLER joining the twice-played bonus list. A complete list of repeated bonuses can be found here. MONIKERS was a 194-point nine-timer, and highest scoring play since I started recording my bonuses.

My thirteen misses this month included two sevens (NIOBATE and VIDUAGE) and eleven eights (AUTODYNE, GAUCIEST, GROTTIER, LANTHORN, LYRICISE, OUTTRICK, PATINATE, TUTANIAS, WATERISH, and XENOTIME). Both sevens and five of the eights are Tier One words, which means I’ll need to review those soon before I get back into the tournament scene. A complete list of missed bonuses can be found here. NIOBATE and VIDUAGE join ANEROID as bonuses I’ve missed having found them previously, all very high-probability words. FAIRYDOM remains the lone word I’ve found having missed it previously.

Games vs world champion David Eldar

In honor of the crowning of a new World Scrabble Champion, I’m posting two games that I played against David Eldar on the Internet Scrabble Club in 2011. The dictionary at the time was CSW07 (two updates ago) and I had only begun studying Collins Scrabble Words five months prior. This was the first interaction I ever had with Eldar, and we each managed to post 600 points against the other in back-to-back games. He nine-timered out with BORACITE in the first game, then I sealed game two with ECDYSIS and DIPLOMATA/ANGULAR. Crazy. We finally met in France at least year’s World Championship, though we have yet to play in person.

Game 1: Lucas Freeman vs David Eldar. L 274-626.
Internet Scrabble Club (ISC), 27 September 2011, CSW07.

Game 2: Lucas Freeman vs David Eldar. W 607-427.
Internet Scrabble Club (ISC), 27 September 2011, CSW07.

In addition, here’s a game I played against the 2017 WSC runner-up Harshan Lamabadusuriya earlier that same month:

Game 1: Lucas Freeman vs Harshan Lamabadusuriya. W 485-329.
Internet Scrabble Club (ISC), 04 September 2011, CSW07.

Scrabble Bonus Words — August 2017

It’s been a year since I’ve played Scrabble and recorded my bonuses. After the World Championship in Lille where I succumbed to an injury and had to withdraw (I don’t even think I recorded those bonuses), I took a yearlong hiatus from the game and didn’t record anything. Now that I’ve gone a full year without any post-concussion symptoms, I’ve started playing and studying again. The following is my bonus word list for August 2017 from games I played in person, on ISC.ro, against Quackle, and at the  MindSports International site. Blanks are not recorded. A complete list of bonus words played can be found here.

Sevens (23): ANATTAS, ANOPSIA, ATONIES, ATTIRED, BEACONS, DEALERS, ETAERIO, EVOKING, HISTONE, IVORIST, LENTOID, MANITUS, PARRIER, PROFANE, PRUNERS, RAVAGES, RELEASE, SEALANT, SNEEZED, SQUEEZE, STUDIES, SWANNED, TANISTS.

Eights (28): ALLOWING, BISCOTTO, BOTANICA, CERULEIN, CLEMATIS, CONVIVER*, CURATRIX, ENJOINER, EXORDIUM, FAIRYDOM, FISTNOTE, FLUIDITY, FRAYINGS, GANTLOPE, GYROLITE, LABORITE, MARABOUT, ORIELLED, PAROUSIA, POTTERED, POUNCERS, PROCAINE, REALISED, SETTLING, STANDERS, STELLION, TABOURED, VISIONAL.

Nines (1): CHOCOLATE.

Fifty-two bonuses played in August, with one nine and no CSW15 additions. Very pleased with my 89.5% success rate in finding bonuses after such a long break. My six misses were NAUSEAS, BESOOTHE, COTTISED, GOATIEST, PEPONIUM, and SNOWPLOW. I could add BOTANICA to this list except that after unsuccessfully trying ABACTION* I found the correct bonus the following turn. CONVIVER* was the one phony I got away with. A complete list of missed bonuses can be found here. I can also add ANOPSIA, and PROFANE to my list of bonuses played twice. A complete list of repeated bonuses can be found here. Of my fifty-two bonuses, twenty-two were Tier One. FLUIDITY and CHOCOLATE score lowest in playability. GOATIEST was my lone Tier One miss. SQUEEZE now stands as my highest-scoring opening play (118 points; the S was a blank).

CHOCOLATE becomes my fourth least playable bonus ahead of only KOPECKS, DISEMBOWEL, and PRESSINGLY, and just behind WORDBOOK and ADORKABLE, according to Zyzzyva (although these have likely occurred zero times among the eight million simulation games in O’laughlin’s Quackle playability metric, making them all effectively tied for last).

FAIRYDOM is the first bonus I’ve found that I had also previously missed. Back in July I did the opposite, missing ANEROID having found it previously.

Scrabble Bonus Words — August 2016

I’m cutting August off a week early since I won’t be “playing” anymore Scrabble games until the World Championship. My focuses will be mostly on review and relaxation so I don’t burn out before I get to France. August has been better than July; I found 90% of my bonuses and my review of the shorter words is paying off. When I return from France I’ll add my bonuses from Worlds to September’s list. The following is my bonus word list for August 2016 from games I played in person, on ISC.ro, against Quackle, and at the  MindSports International site. Blanks are not recorded. A complete list of bonus words played can be found here.

Sevens (26): ACETALS, ADVENES, AEOLIAN, AMBIENT, ANNELID, APLITES, BODICES, DAMNERS, FADEURS, FETIALS, GABFEST, HARRIES, JIVEASS, LEGATOS, MODERNE, MORALES, PASSADO, PIANOLA+, RESTING, RITARDS, RULLION, SILTIER, STERILE, STRINES+, WAITRON, ZIPOLAS+.

Eights (26): AERATION, BOGARTED, BURGANET, CANTORIS, CORVETED, DIALYZER, DIELDRIN, DOGTAILS+, ETIOLATE, FALDETTA, FARMLAND, FERULING, GRENADES, KERATOID, OVERAWED, PECTINAL, PYROLISE, REBITING, RENEAGUE+, REROOFED, RETAINED, SLEIGHED, STEERING, TABBINET, TORMENTA, TRAMELED.

Nines (1): GEMSTONES

I can’t add any words to my repeated bonuses list this month, but I’ve played RETAINED thrice now. A complete list of repeated bonuses can be found here. Five words are new CSW15 additions: PIANOLA+, STRINES+, ZIPOLAS+, DOGTAILS+, and RENEAGUE+.

The only bonuses I missed this month were BOUCHEE, DOTTILY, MERENGUE, PALUDOSE, TRAPLIKE, and DIABETICS, none of which are Tier One. I went 25/25 on finding my Tier Ones. A complete list of missed bonuses can be found here.
